Charlotte Berry

Group Payroll Manager

Describe yourself in three words?

Smiley, giggly and friendly

Favourite holiday spot?

That’s a tough one, would have to be Italy for short haul and New Zealand for long haul

Favourite drink?

There are so many to choose from, if it’s alcohol then currently it’s Aperol Spritz, if it’s non-alcoholic it’s a nice strong cup of tea

When and Why did you join Trinity?

I joined Trinity in July 2011 after working 9 years at MITIE as an Accounts Administrator. The way the construction (mechanical & electrical) side of MITIE operated was changing with redundancies and mergers of the various regions, the opportunity came up to progress my career with a move to Trinity so decided to make the jump. 8 years later I’m still here at Trinity and have progressed my career from Central Accounts Manager to Group Payroll Manager.

What is your role at Trinity and what does it involve?

I have the responsibility of paying Trinity’s 385 plus staff each month, this includes calculation of sickness, maternity, paternity, mileage, commission etc. There is a lot of communication and information collation throughout the month from Engineers, Engineering Supervisors, Managers, Directors, the Fleet Manager and the HR Department not only for payroll but also for completion of the P11D’s (statement of expenses and benefits) each year. I also administer the Group Pension Scheme and payments of deductions, such as tax, national insurance plus the apprenticeship levy to HMRC as well as dealing with other agencies such as the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) and local authorities.

What’s the best part of your job?

Knowing that on pay day I have done my best to ensure that all employees are paid.

What kind of challenges do you face in your role?

Legislation changes and case law are the biggest challenges, keeping up to date with them and ensuring that the system is up to date, this is especially hard at the tax year end when you move from one year to the next. I am a member of the CIPP (Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals) who help to advise and assist with any matters that may not have occurred before and our HR/Payroll system provider, Civica, who are in constant communication with HMRC for updates.

Tell us an unusual fact about yourself?

I once appeared in an advert on TV to advertise Dartmoor Wildlife Park, I was on a school trip and it happened to be the same day they were filming!
